Vision

To contribute to the holistic development of the students; and heighten their chances for post-secondary education through academic attainments that match, or exceed the national achievements.

Mission

To cultivate an appreciation and interest of the Humanities in the students through varied teaching approaches and an immersion in the real-world.

The Humanities subjects have always not been well-received by students of neighbourhood schools. This stems in part from the mistaken perception they have that the Humanities subjects are of no consequence to their chances of admission to the polytechnics. As a department, we try to make the subject more palatable to the students by making the subject alive and relevant to their daily life. Varied teaching approaches, which also take into account the multiple-intelligences of the learners, as well as field trips to various places, to an extent help to achieve this objective.

In line with TLLM, the Department has attempted to shift from teacher-centric instruction to more student-centered approaches. More experiential learning opportunities have been built into the curriculum, such as through learning journeys and other out-of-classroom learning activities. Mind mapping has also been widely promoted as a means to shift the responsibility of learning to the students.

In 6-8 June this year, 74 students and 6 teachers went on a learning journey of discovery to Tanjung Karang and Kuala Lumpur. The field “transformed” into their classroom, and for the first time in their life, many came face to face with a combine harvester and wide expanses of lush padi fields.
